Overview
The Cabrini Green Youth Program (CGYP) was founded in 1984 by a group of Northwestern University Medical School students concerned about the plight of children living in the Cabrini Green housing project, located near the medical school. Certain that the only way for these children to escape poverty and all its associated health and social risks was through the promotion of healthy lifestyles, higher education and job placement, the students created CYP. Currently, CGYP continues to serve the youth of Cabrini Green with comprehensive programs consisting of tutoring, mentoring, recreation, college and career preparations, scholarships, and free high-quality health care from volunteer physicians at CYP’s Children’s Memorial Health Clinic. Programs continue to operated in donated space at Northwestern University Law and Medical Schools and Seward Park, serving over 125 youth.
Programs
LITERACY:
Read to Me (3-6 year olds) – Read to Me fosters the child’s interest in written language while teaching age-appropriate literacy concepts. The program pairs children with an adult volunteer.

PREP (3-6 year olds) – This program stresses the importance of parental involvement in their child’s education. Trained by volunteer pediatricians, parenting and literacy experts, parents conduct small group phonics activities and prepare/serve a healthy meal.

TUTORING:
SCORE Tutoring I, II, and III (1st-6th grade) & Teen Tutoring (7th – 9th grade) – SCORE Tutoring provides one-on-one assistance to youth, focusing on establishing healthy, trustworthy relationships between tutors and tutees and empowering tutors to identify and teach concepts critical to their student’s long-term outcome not fully mastered in the classroom, through CYP-developed Concept Packages.

Burling On-Site Tutoring (1st-6th grade) – Provides one-on-one academic assistance for children living in the 1230 N. Burling building in Cabrini Green. Children work on homework and supplemental concept packets with a volunteer.

MENTORING:
Saturday Dreams (PreK - 9th Grade) – The oldest of all CYP programs, Saturday Dreams provides a “window to the world” for children aged three through 15. While primarily a recreational activity, Saturday Dreams also provides the opportunity for volunteers to develop positive, supportive mentoring relationships with youth.

Teen Exodus (7th-12th grade) –Teen Exodus is a one-on-one mentoring program for teen girls ages 12-17. Girls meet with their mentors once each week to discuss topics of concern and develop a positive role model relationship with a pre-professional or professional adult woman.

Diverse Young Men (7th-9th grade) – Teens meet with their mentors once each week to discuss topics of concern and develop a positive role model relationship with a pre-professional or professional adult male.

PRIMARY & PREVENTIVE HEALTH PROGRAMS:
Comprehensive Volunteer Health Clinic – Located in donated space within Children’s Memorial Hospital, this award-winning free clinic is run by volunteer physicians providing physicals, sick care, immunizations, well care, gynecological exams, eye and ear testing, social work and 24-hour emergency care to our youth.

RECREATION:
CGYP youth, who regularly attend our educational programs, enjoy a wide array of positive recreational activities. Programs include soccer, golf, book clubs, arts/crafts, camps, skating, bowling, movies, museums and variety of other outings and experiences.
